CLJ Gives’ Community Outreach held an event featuring our “Green Groceries Initiative” in the 5 Points West community of Birmingham, Alabama on August 17, 2019. The Green Groceries Initiative provides free produce to encourage a healthy and nutritious lifestyle.
Although the event didn’t begin until 11:00 a.m., some attendees along with their chairs, boxes, bags, and carts came as early as 8:00 a.m. from different communities of the city and as far away as Bessemer. We also learned some attendees came via MAX Transit.
Most of the people attending the event live in food deserts. Food deserts are locations without easy access to fresh, healthy, and affordable foods and are usually measured by the distance people have to travel to get to a large grocery store or supermarket. Food consumed in food deserts is often high in cholesterol, sugar, and fat.
A special thanks to Amir Ashou for providing the location, water, and his help during for the event.
