September is National Voter Registration Month

For Immediate Release — August 29, 2019 —

Washington, D.C. — Promoting voter registration deadlines, tools and eligibility conditions are important duties of the 40 Secretaries of State who serve as their state’s chief election official. This is why the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) established September as National Voter Registration Month in 2002 to encourage voter participation and increase awareness of the voter registration process.

“Celebrating September as National Voter Registration Month is a terrific opportunity to remind people to get registered, or check their registration status! It’s vital to remember to look to election officials’ websites and other official channels, as they are the trusted sources for elections information,” said NASS President and Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate. “Informing eligible Americans about voter registration and ultimately registering them to vote is the best part of my job as Secretary of State, and I know my colleagues feel the same way.”

To find your election official or to learn more about your state’s specific voter registration requirements visit canivote.org, a helpful nonpartisan website created by state election officials to help eligible individuals learn how and where to go vote.

NASS members will also partner with other non-profits and organizations to promote National Voter Registration Day, which is Tuesday, September 24, 2019.
