CLJ Gives’ Green Groceries Initiative at BAL APWU Union Hall in Birmingham, Alabama on June 16, 2019.
Many of the residents attending the event live in food deserts. Food deserts are locations without easy access to fresh, healthy, and affordable foods and are usually measured by the distance people have to travel to get to a large grocery store or supermarket. Food consumed in food deserts is often high in cholesterol, sugar, and fat.
The Green Groceries Initiative provides free produce to encourage a healthy and nutritious lifestyle.
Special thanks to Josh and Raven Lee for volunteering and providing information about freezing veggies, nutritious snacks and encouraging drinking water.
