These Foods Fuel Your Healthy Lifestyle

If you want to have more energy on a daily basis,  it is essential to eat the right foods. While all varieties of foods provide an energy source for your body, there are certain foods that have more nutrients than others. While shopping at a supermarket, look for the foods on this list.

Dark Green Leafy Greens

Dark green leafy greens are packed with nutrients that will give you additional physical energy and mental focus. Some of the types of dark leafy greens that are recommended by dietitians include:

Arugula
Broccoli
Cabbage
Chard
Kale
Spinach

Some of these dark leafy greens are versatile enough to eat raw or cooked.

 Fatty Fish

If you want to eat more omega-3 fatty acids, buy fatty fish. There are several types of fish that contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids:

Anchovy
Herring
Mackerel
Sardines
Trout
Tuna

By consuming fatty fish three or four times a week, you are ingesting omega-3 fatty acids that will protect your body’s joints and brain so that you will have optimal health. Remember it is better to eat fatty fish that is steamed or broiled rather than fried.

Sweet Potatoes

Choose sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes. You can prepare sweet potatoes year-round in the same type of recipes that require white potatoes but sweet potatoes have more nutrients. Here are some of the vitamins and minerals in a sweet potato:

Calcium
Magnesium
Protein
Vitamin A
Vitamin B6
Vitamin C

You can buy individual or large bags of sweet potatoes at your local supermarket.

Brightly Colored Fruits

Choose brightly colored fruits rather than having ice cream or pretzels for a snack. You can find seasonal fresh fruit at low prices at your supermarket, but there are also canned, dried and frozen fruits available. Look for these fruits when shopping for groceries:

Apples
Blackberries
Blueberries
Cantaloupes
Oranges
Strawberries

By eating more fruit, you are ingesting more minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.

Yogurt

Today, your supermarket will have a wide assortment of yogurt flavors. You can find plain yogurt that you can add your own fruit to, or you can find yogurt that is already flavored with these ingredients:

Bananas
Chocolate
Limes
Peaches
Pumpkin spice

You are consuming calcium and protein when you are eating yogurt.

Nuts

Nuts are high in calories or fat, this food is healthy in small portions.  Dietitians recommend buying unsalted nuts. Choose these varieties of nuts at a supermarket:

Almonds
Brazil nuts
Cashews
Pecans
Walnuts

Remember that a portion of nuts is only 10 to 20 pieces, however, this food offers protein, selenium and iron to give you additional energy.
